Tickets were not cheap at five shillings each. On the 7 th September there was — the oratorio Samson; on the 8 th September, the oratorio Athalia ; on the 9 th September — Messiah. The Manchester Mercury in advertised two performances of the Messiah , to celebrate the opening of the new organ at the parish church in Halifax. These were morning performances. A week ahead of the concert, the Norfolk Chronicle advertised a performance of the Messiah at St.

The Elgin Courier reprinted a report from the Times giving a detailed account of the Messiah , as performed at the Sydenham Crystal palace during the afternoon of Monday 15 th June The scale of the performance must have been magnificent, considering the huge size of the Crystal Palace.

There are many other reports of this concert in the BNA. The reporting of the Messiah became almost routine for many newspapers — the brief anticipatory entry in the Worcestershire Chronicle of April being typical. Isaiah was a prophet to the southern kingdom of Judah around the time the northern kingdom of Israel fell to Assyria.

In a tumultuous time of warring superpowers threatening Judah, Isaiah offered messages from the Lord of both judgment and hope. Isaiah was a message of hope. In it, a coming king was promised. Isaiah explains,.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. This passage came to be understood as referring to the coming Messiah. To us as Christians, the messianic prophecies point to Jesus. At this point, Judah was facing the threat of the Assyrian Empire.

Likely, they expected the promised prince to grow into a great king to physically deliver them—perhaps the son of King Ahaz would be the one? He set his mind to purging idolatry from Judah, and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, from whom God miraculously rescued Judah 2 Kings However, Hezekiah died.

The Lord intended to punish Israel, but Isaiah shows that His anger was not forever. Isaiah predicted that Jesus would be born of a virgin.

Isaiah predicted He would be from Galilee. Isaiah proclaimed that Jesus would be from the line of David. However, the most extensive prophecy from Isaiah is found in Isaiah In it, Isaiah painted a picture not of a mighty warrior king, but of a suffering servant who would bring salvation. Isaiah states,. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. It would be several hundred years before anyone could begin to understand exactly how all of these seemingly conflicting identities fit together—in the person of Jesus Christ.

As Handel develops the theme the final proclamations represent the important unison words of the piece. For Unto Us finishes as the orchestra plays the main theme one last time before coming to a joyous end, and thus concluding this scene.
