He left Jordin a note that said, 'Jor, go all the way. Take care of the family. You are the man. He bottled that despair, left it all out on the ice and racked up his best statistical season with Brandon. That following year, he cracked the Predators roster and represented Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships, winning silver.

From an early age, Jordin spent time on the land with his family hunting , fishing and camping. He credits the mental and physical toughness he learned on the land as the source of his strength to persevere in hockey and life. Today, when he visits Inuit communities, he often talks about keeping Inuit culture, traditions and connection to the land strong.
Jordin Tootoo spent most of his minor hockey years playing non-organized games with the kids of Rankin Inlet. They also played pick-up games on nearby Williamson Lake during winter. There were no organized teams and regular hockey rules did not apply. Tournaments were rare. Jordin credits the beginnings of his tough style of play to his early days of Rankin Inlet hockey where the older boys taught him to fight and push himself physically and mentally.
He joined his older brother, Terence, who started with the team in  The brothers played on the same line and lived in The Pas , Manitoba. It was the last time they played hockey together. He played games in four seasons with the Wheat Kings, accumulating points. In his first year with the Wheat Kings, Tootoo scored only 6 goals in 45 games but accumulated penalty minutes. He would wear number 22 during his NHL career, as well.
He attended his first NHL training camp that fall before going back to play junior hockey for two more seasons in Brandon. In , he was called up to play for the Predators.
On December 6, , the NHL suspended him again, this time for two games, as a result of a charging incident against Buffalo Sabres' goaltender Ryan Miller during a game on December 3,  The incident occurred after Nashville's own GM, David Poile, publicly supported league action to prevent such hits on goaltenders. Columbus Blue Jackets' forward Derek Dorsett accused Jordin of throwing a sucker punch at him during a game on February 20,  Jordin represented Canada at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships where he recorded two goals and one assist in six games and won a silver medal.
His older brother, Terence played hockey in the ECHL for the Roanoke Express; he committed suicide in August of in the wake of an arrest for drunk driving. His middle name, Kudluk, means "thunder" in Inuktitut. Although he was born in Manitoba, Jordin grew up in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, where he was taught to skate and play hockey by his father. Growing up in Rankin Inlet also allowed him to learn the traditional Inuit lifestyle that includes hunting and camping.
Along with his brother Terence, he used hockey as a ticket out of the culture they grew up in. Following successful completion of the program, he returned to finish the season and play in the Stanley Cup playoffs. During the —13 NHL lockout , Jordin took it upon himself to head up to his home town of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut in order to host the first Team Tootoo hockey camp for the local kids.
The player that is selected is granted 25, dollars to a foundation of their choice, which ended up being the kickstart to his foundation.
