But the performances by both leads are so effective that this minor shortcoming is noticeable only the first time you watch the movie, when you're primed for a triumphant resolution to the characters' fledgling romances but fifteen more minutes of character development appears instead. Vaughn in particular is a favorite actor of mine, if for no other reason than his unceasingly admirable dedication to playing roles - and creating characters - that are resolutely unlikable.
His commitment to authenticity, even at the expense of viewer identification, is what not only established his career but since preserved it; at the same time, however, there's a sort of sincerity to these characters - even an obnoxious lothario like Jeremy - that proves undeniable, and creates unexpected, equally sincere sympathy in an audience that would normally castigate a lesser actor in the role.
Wilson, meanwhile, may be an effortless charmer, but he's also the silver screen's unlikeliest movie star - seldom has an actor seduced the screen as effectively and yet never seemed to break a sweat or even seem to make any effort at all. Here, he has the less showy of the two main roles, but his is the lynchpin performance of the film; without an effective and believable counterpart to Vaughn's shameless, hilarious scenery-chewing, the film would have crossed into buffoonish if no-doubt-hysterical Anchorman territory.
There's something devious about his John Beckwith, but also desirable, and Wilson carefully balances the two impulses with his deftly detached comic sensibility. The "Uncorked Edition" features eight and a half more minutes of footage into the film, which feels about right for a movie that was arguably too long during its theatrical run. Among the scenes added are a run-in with one of Jeremy's former hook-ups, whom they dispatch with humorous desperation; more sequences involving Todd Keir O'Donnell , Secretary Cleary's oddball son; an extended seduction scene between Jeremy and Gloria in which he quotes Schopenhauer; a throwaway gag where Jeremy is mistaken by the Clearys' manservant to be seducing Grandma Cleary; and a longer version of the conversation with Father O'Neil Henry Gibson where Jeremy inquires how he, uh, keeps himself entertained.
Overall this film is more enjoyable on the small screen because the humor feels more intimate - if ever two stars felt like best pals, Vaughn and Wilson are them; additionally, there's always the luxury of rewinding the film to catch those few jokes you missed while chuckling at others.
But the simple and often-overlooked virtue of creating characters and situations that we not only laugh at, but sympathize with and care about elevates this film to more than a forgettable, fun lark. So while there's always a temporary window in your schedule for that Rob Schneider movie or an extra spot on your Netflix list for Ice Cube's latest, keep a place in your heart for Wedding Crashers ; it's one of the very few films that seduce your funny bone that you will still love the morning after you've added it to your permanent collection.
Score: 9 out of 10 The Video Presented in anamorphic widescreen 2. Director David Dobkin Clay Pigeons, Shanghai Knights does a spectacular job blocking and exploring each frame of film, and the color and clarity are well-preserved on the small screen. At the same time, occasional scenes and-or shots reveal grain detail that does not seem part of the original cinematography. These, however, are infrequent distractions from an otherwise terrific transfer. The Frat Pack goes from strength to strength in a robust romp that's only marred by the director's apparent inability to say "Cut!
A bawdy summer comedy for adults and mature teens, this movie features rapid-fire dialogue and sincere affection between best-friend leads and strong chemistry between the actors who portray them. What should've been an absolutely raucous and no-holds-barred lusty farce is nothing but lame-ass, safe, predictable, lowest common denominator, no-laffs garbage. With great acting, hilarious gags, and great writing, it actually lives up to the hype.
Vince Vaughn commits rampant acts of comic zeal while the script around him crumbles in a movie that loses its thrust like a cat caught in traffic. The two actors make a good contrasting team and bring an energy to the story that many romantic comedies lack. My Movies. Wedding Crashers Uncorked Edition [Unrated].
